When Are You Ready To Franchise Your Business?

I meet at least one person each week who would like to franchise their business and I give the same advice each time.   I want to make sure that the founder of a business does not try to franchise too early and fail. Or that they attract franchisees to their brand before the franchisor is ready to support them and they fail as franchisees.

Prior to deciding to franchise your business, you need to have the following ingredients to grow:

  1. Successful operating units. You can not franchise a business that is not making any money for you. If you have not perfected the model and generated a profit large enough to pay yourself and able to pay a royalty, your concept needs to be improved. If the model is not able to generate a 15-20% return on investment after deducting the royalty which is typically 4-8%, the franchisors may find it difficult to retain franchisees.
  2. Duplicate your success. You need to shift from working “In” the business to working “On” the business. If you have been able to open a second or third unit without doing all the work and have able to train staff to run the business as well as, you have a system that can be duplicated by others.
  3. Have detailed written instructions for every step of your business. When setting up your second or third unit, you need to document each step so you can have reviewed and perfected each portion of the Operations Manual. This will be a vital part of your franchise system that you will be offering to the public.
  4. Have a repeatable Market Strategy. Is your concept innovative? Have you identified the target customer and developed a predictable means for attracting them to your product or service? What is your concept’s unique competitive advantage? Franchise candidates are seeking marketing and sales systems as well as operating systems.
  5. Trademark your brand. Before you go too far, you need to know you can protect your name/brand so you can franchise it. If you open a business called “Child Care” and anyone else can use the same name, it will be difficult to protect your brand equity.
  6. Have adequate capital to create the franchise support business. Often business owners see franchising as a means to attract both money and motivated “managers” to expand their concept nationally. While franchisors do utilize other’s financial resources and talents to reach new consumer markets, the franchisor needs to provide the support systems-technology and staff- to help the franchisees succeed. This is different than the systems used to operate their corporate owned franchise units.
  7. Test your concept to make sure you are not building something that will eventually face adversity from the market place.

Once you have these elements, talk to other franchisors to ask them for advice. Also ask them to challenge your concept, so you are prepared in advance of what franchise prospects will also question before joining your franchise.

Many great companies have been created from founders with great ideas coupled with experienced franchise consultants who can take your business to 100 units or more in less than five years.   So our listing at LINK TO FRANCHISOR RESOURCES.
