Make Money in the “Life Goes On” Category:  Consumer Services Franchises to See Growth in 2010

Recession resistant businesses to rebound quickly as economy recovers

Hair grows, grass grows, people age, floods happen. These things go on no matter what the economy does. That makes consumer services franchises attractive, even in tough economic times.

Consumer, or personal services franchises are expected to see growth this year, according to the Franchise Business Economic Outlook for 2010*. At 4.4%, personal services are expected to see the largest year-over-year growth in dollars among all sectors examined in the report.

With options ranging from children’s services to pet care, automotive to home improvement, senior services to household cleaning and maintenance, the choices abound for people who want to own their own business.

As the population ages, senior care franchises are gaining popularity. Paul Blom in Minneapolis found just the right fit with Right at Home Senior Care. “If you are interested in making a difference in the lives of seniors and other people who are disabled, interested in a line of work that isn’t always easy, can be very challenging and at the same time rewarding, and you need the satisfaction in knowing that you made a difference in people’s lives, I’d say go for it.”

The increasing number of working parents, single parents and senior citizens means people are hiring out more “DIY” jobs, such as cleaning, painting, tax preparation and even laundry delivery.

“I can’t wait for tax season, it’s quite an event. My customers look forward to seeing me and have me help them with what they would otherwise consider to be a mundane chore,” says Ann Tomao, a franchise owner and tax preparer with SmartTax.

Franchise owners benefit from name recognition and proven systems for marketing, estimating and delivering service. Rob Kadnuck has enjoyed being a Molly Maid franchise owner. “Molly Maid has me bursting with pride. It's a leader in the franchise industry and It's earned a reputation for quality, service and value."

Consumer services franchises vary widely in start up costs. Many are home-based or van based, but some, like hair care, require a fixed retail location. Successful franchisees grow their businesses by adding territories or opening new locations.
