4 Questions To Ask When Considering Home-Based Franchises

Perhaps you have decided that now is the time to be your own boss and to start a home-based franchise. This can be a very exciting time as you look through all of the franchises for sale out there and try to decide which one you will start.

Before you get too excited and put out any money, make sure you know what you are getting into. You need to make a wise and responsible business decision for your financial future. Here are four questions you should ask yourself before you decide which franchise for sale to "buy".

What do you know?

When you are considering running a franchise and looking over a list of franchises to choose from, you should think about what you are familiar with and what industries you understand. The better you understand an industry, the easier it will be to get the business up and running.

What do you love?

When it comes to the easiest franchises to run, the key is to find something that seems less like work and more like enjoyment. What do you love to do? What are you good at? The answers to these questions may help you identify small franchise opportunities that you might not have thought about, that you will be able to run from your home.

Is there a need for your service?

While doing something you know and love is all well and good, it will not necessarily make your business venture successful. Instead, you need to take the time to get to know what other businesses are offering similar services in your area, and how much of a market there is for your business.

If there are a number of companies offering the same type of service you would be offering, is there a way for you to be the franchise authority in the field? Can you set yourself apart from the other businesses enough to reach the customer base and make a profit? Is there a customer base to support your desired revenue goal? Is there even a need for the service you are considering offering.

To get the answers to these questions you can begin by researching the industry in which you are considering buying a franchise. The first thing you can do is read the International Franchise Association 2010 Industry Forecast Report. This will help you understand the trends in each industry and which ones are expected to grow.

Second, you need to do research in the local area or region where you are going to open your home-based franchise business. You’ll want to know if this is a kind of business that will both interest the people in the area enough to become customers and that you have enough of those people to sustain profitability. The franchisors that you are interested in can provide information about the ideal demographics for their concept.

Can you beat the competition?

If there are other companies offering the same business as you, does it mean you should give up on the venture? No! You should consider how your business would differ from theirs. How do the franchisor’s marketing plan and materials help you get the upper edge? Is there something you can offer that is different or better than your competition? If you can find a way to better suit the needs of your customers than other similar companies in the area you can use that ability to turn their customers into your profit base.
